Natural High
While interviewing people for this project, we encountered a group
of young men sitting in a dark corner by the sidewalk. When asked what
it is they like about Malate, they groggily mumbled incoherent answers.
Clearly, they were wasted.
Fun, music, parties and drinks-all are trademarks of Malate. But
underneath the glitter and glamour of this place lies a hidden threat to
the lives of its patrons. Drugs has always been a given in the list of
party favors in this area. Residents and party goers readily admit that
drugs are never lacking from Malate. Ecstasy, marijuana, shabu,
acid-these are causes of the "high" some people get from partying in Malate.
It is also the cause of crimes such as fights and gunshooting in the
area. People come to Malate to feel the natural "high" of having fun. The
relief drugs give you may be fine for a couple of hours. But then as it
leads to addiction, the fun of a "natural high" and a night of
going-out with your friends just might turn into your worst nightmare.
