Places To Go
by Jen Lua
With reports from Joanna Pavon, Revi Anne Mendoza and Merlisa Biscocho

Six hours in four of the most happening places in Metro Manila: Makati, Malate, Ortigas and Quezon City.

Four teams comprised of three people each will be roaming around their designated places, looking for the not-so-usual night adventures.

Makati

First up: Makati. Ayala Avenue is a bustling street that never sleeps. During the day, it is filled with people in business suits with their briefcases, crossing intersections and dodging speeding buses. As soon as the sun sets, a different kind of people comes out. These night owls prowl around looking for places to celebrate the nighttime.

For those who enjoy live music and body-bumping, the places to go are the Hard Rock Cafe and The Fort. Both places feature live bands who display their talent to the delight of the party-goers. The party ends only when the last dancer leaves.

On Jupiter Street is a wild abundance of restaurants that offer every type of food available that can satisfy even the most discriminating palate. The newest addition is La Grange, a restaurant that offers French food and music. No one is turned away, except for those who appear in ties.

Malate

Manila's night life is one of the most exciting in Asia. This reflects the Filipino's love for music, parties and celebrations. There are cafes, karaoke/videoke bars, dance clubs, fine dining restaurants, and bars with live entertainment featuring various artists. All these exciting happenings can be seen in one of the emerging popular hang-out of most youth of today--Malate.

Malate is considered to be one of the top tourist spots in the metropolis. Day in and day out, one can never run out of places to go. A lot of scenery and historical landmarks can be seen.

As the sun sets, the streets of Malate come alive with its sights and sounds...multi-colored neon lights, pulsating beats, and high-spirited conversations punctuated with laughter. It has become a place where the young and the not so young gather every weekend, or even on weekdays, just to mingle and chill out with friends. Since the streets of Adriatico, Nakpil, Orosa and Remedios Circle are all interconnected, one can just walk from one place to another. What people usually do is park their cars on one of those streets, and off they go. One doesn't need to venture too far just to look for another place. This is why Malate has become a favorite gimmick place. It is filled with all kinds of crowds, including many from the literary, social, art, fashion, entertainment and political scenes.

Malate is synonymous with street parties, where one can dance and drink as long as he wants all through the night . These parties are usually held on the streets of J. Nakpil and Orosa. The streets are closed off and the people party right there on the street. The streets become the extension of all the bars located on it. Insomnia, Gotham, Episode, Jazz Rhythms, Common Ground, Sala, People's Palace, Pepe and Pilar, Sexes at Ma. Orosa are some of the bars and restaurants that are worth visiting.

For those who can't live without their coffees, Remedios Circle is the place to be. Cafe Adriatico, considered to be one of the most popular cafes in Metro Manila, is found here.

Other popular neighboring cafes include The Penguin Cafe, which is just across the Circle. The food is average. The atmosphere is conducive to lively conversation and gossip. There is live entertainment available. Karaoke bars are also located in the area. The Library, an example of such, combines the role of cafe with that of a karaoke bar and restaurant, and is popular with both locals and visitors for its fun atmosphere and tasty snacks.

Ortigas Center

Next stop: Ortigas. Once famous for its serene river, Pasig City has long outgrown its reputation as the main sea passage during the colonial times. Now it's best known for its establishments that exude modernization. The focus deviated from its now stinking river to the lively beat of its commercial area, Ortigas.

SM Megamall, with its herculean structure, is not limited to various boutiques and shops. Now merging other aspects of entertainment, the mall has incorporated a bowling and billiards center that plays upbeat music, drawing crowds from all ages. Moreover, among the different food establishments inside the mall, one serves Filipino dishes on a platter with a banana leaf. Enjoy the sumptuous food while the waiters and the cooks serenade the customers.

A stone's throw away from the mall is St. Francis Square where different bars, cafes, and fine restaurants are assembled in an island between criss-crossing roads. One can go resto-hopping from one place to another, from loud music to relaxing atmosphere. It only takes a few steps to get to the next place. El Pueblo is another convergeance of different hang-outs. The keyword to areas such as this is accesibility. Bored with lounging and listening to music? Step out of the door and a whole new gimik flaunts itself at you.

Quezon City

Quezon City is not just a city in the north anymore. Places like Tomas Morato and Timog have been sprouting from out of nowhere and gaining popularity by the moment. Traffic jams are now commonplace as more and more people from as far south as Las Pinas are making their way to Quezon City for a good time.

Tomas Morato is a long street filled with must-visit night spots on both sides. Longing for a relaxing talk with friends? Coffee bars such as Starbucks, Figaro, and UEC are just around the corner. Craving for oyster cakes and spareribs? Mann Yann has the best in the city. Spanish paella more your style? Dulcinea has that and the best fruit shake to date.

SM doesn't reserve all it has for SM Megamall. SM North Edsa's bowling center features live entertainment every Saturday night where people can dance the night away and bowl to their hearts' content.

Along Timog Avenue is a music hall, bar and restaurant in one called Kampo. Every night, Kampo features different performers and musicians. On the other side of the street is Phenomena which also offers live entertainment for those who appreciate pop music.

For those who want to follow in Efren Reyes's footsteps, several billiard halls are scattered all over the city. One of them is Bilyar, a billiard hall/bar and restaurant located along E. Rodriguez Avenue.
