Youthful "Gimiks"by Janis Piopongco

YOUTH = (yooth), n., pl. YOUTHS (yooths). 1. the condition of being young. 2. qualities, as freshness and vigor, characteristics of the young. 3. the time of being young. 4. the period of life from puberty to adulthood. 5. a first or early period of something. 6. young persons collectively. (Webster's Pocket Dictionary)

The youth refers to any group of people described above. This word has been associated with a specific age bracket in society that is made up of people full of vigor and life. In other words, they are blossoming ones who are just about to come out into the real world.

However, no matter how universal the descriptions are, one can still observe different traits in the youth in various places. The differences may be observed in numerous ways. Examining each aspect reveals that each youth group in each country possesses unique characteristics. Differences may be observed in the way they speak, act, and think and the ways they have fun.

Allow us now to usher you towards a newfound knowledge about the YOUTH of the PHILIPPINES. We, a class of young students of De La Salle University, Philippines are going to introduce you to the different places where the Filipino youth hangout. This endeavor would give people from the different walks of life a chance to have a close encounter with Filipinos.

We hope to reveal the activities of young Filipinos and the ways in which they have fun. It is our intention to show fashion, the moves and grooves, and the trendy places of Metro Manila. You would also have a taste of the colorful personalities of the youth.

Some love to be alone and enjoy quality time with themselves (whatever that means!), some are brave souls who try to get into any kind of adventure, others are totally artistic and spend most of their time perfecting their craft and some simply go gaga about hanging out with chums. No matter what it is they do, one thing's for sure they always make sure that they have fun. This is where the Filipino concept of "gimik" originates.

The New Webster's Dictionary of the English Language defines Gimmick in this manner. GIMMICK = n. 1. a gadget. 2. any clever scheme. 3. any deceptive trick or device.

In the Philippines, people started using the term "gimik" back in the mid or late 1980's. It all started with questions such as "Ano nanamang gimik 'yan?!" which means "So, what are you up to now?" This is used when people are somewhat amazed by the outcome of a cool or a clever act.

The concept of cool and clever has helped in the transformation of "gimmick's" meaning. It has now turned into a cool way of spending one's day or night with friends and family.

GIMIK = (gimik), n. GIMIKS (gimiks), n., pl. 1. a cool thing to do. 2. a time spent with friends. 3. a quest for adventure, fun and excitement. v. to go out or hang out.

The word actually refers to the activities of the young. Since most of the time, the activities of the youth are geared towards having fun and trying new things, the word "gimmick" was then associated with these cool and fun-filled activities in which youth take part.

Since then, phrases such as "Saan ang gimik mamaya?" and "Gimik tayo!" have become popular among young people. They only mean "Where do we hang out later?" and "Let's go out!" respectively.

It doesn't matter where this "gimik" is just as long as it is done with friends or with anybody with whom one feels comfortable. It may be a girls' night out, a boys' night out, or simply a night out with one's kind of crowd. It may be a day at the mall, in school or perhaps a party. FUN is the key word.
